February in Florence means the first real glimpse of Spring. We’ve had some great weather of the last few weeks, and, as the month starts, warm Pacific rains are coaxing forth Crocuses and Daffodils. By the end of the month we should have flowers blooming and warm sunshine. February is also the month for Romantics of all ages, and this year Valentine’s Day falls on a weekend. It’s time to make your plans to visit the coast for a romantic weekend and stay with us.

Did you know Valentine’s Day has its origins as a liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus? One of the most popular stories tells of St. Valentine of Rome having been imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire. During his imprisonment, he healed the daughter of his jailer, Asterius. He wrote her a letter just before his execution signed “Your Valentine,” setting the stage for the now traditional signatures we all recognize. We have Geoffrey Chaucer to thank, however, for kicking off the romantic interpretation of this holiday that by the 18th century began to look a great deal like the celebration we know today, an occasion in which lovers express their devotion to each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards.
